Management of Shin SplintsShin splints is a common term used to describe inflammation of the tendons in the front inside part of the lower leg. Many beginner runners are susceptible to shin splints for a number of reasons.
Runners experience aching and tenderness along the inside of the shin and develop tenderness to palpation in this area. The pain is usually most severe during the beginning of the run and diminishes once the muscles loosen up. Treatment consists of icing the area for fifteen to twenty minutes after each run and taking ibuprofen. However, the most important treatment is modification of activity. Adjusting running schedule, wearing proper footwear, proper stretching and warm up will all decrease the incidence of shin splints. Also, running on soft surfaces and avoiding over striding, which puts more stress on these muscles is important. If shin splints persist one may need to temporarily use alternative exercises such as pool running or cycling to maintain cardiovascular conditioning. If the injury does not respond to self-treatment, training modification and rest within two to three weeks, then one should seek medical attention for further evaluation. Y. Susi Folse, MD |
